Bon-joon Koo: LG Electronics CEO

Bon-joon Koo was born in 1951. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Statistics from highly-regarded Seoul National University in South Korea in 1978 and later earned an MBA degree from the University of Chicago in the early 1980s.

Koo worked for a while at AT&T in the U.S. He then returned to South Korea and joined the global electronics giant LG Group.  There was something beyond the ordinary when he joined the company. Koo after all was the grandson of LG Group founder In-hwoi Koo. He is also the younger brother of LG’s current chairman, Bon-Moo Koo.

Koo while obviously having the inside track he has proven his worth in the early part of his career. He managed the joint venture, LG Philips LCD from 1999 to 2006. It is said when he took the job he encouraged employees to adopt the motto “Let’s Become No. 1”, and when this goal was achieved, “Let’s Keep Our No. 1 Title”. Koo has been given credit for leading the way for what is now LG Display to be a global leader in its field by securing a large and risky investment in LCD technology ahead of the competition.

He was appointed CEO and Vice Chairman of LG Electronics in October 1, 2010 and has been Head of Business Innovation Office since November 2010. Before his appointment to Vice Chairman of LG Electronics Koo was the Vice Chairman and CEO of LG International.

Early in his career Koo held numerous executive roles overseeing semiconductors, PCs, IT and chemicals. He returned to LG Electronics where he worked from 1986 to 1995 across a range of business areas. In assuming the top executive position at LG Electronics Koo was tasked with turning around the faltering mobile business.  He has focused on developing their own smartphone range. The reshuffling of managers at LG Electronics also continued. Cost cutting measures have also been implemented.

There is still a long way to go for LG Electronics to become a highly competitive giant once again but Koo has taken the tough and painful actions on the road to recovery.

    This mail is regards on my complain which i wrote you but no response from you or anyone from LG electronics
    Finally again i am trying to request you to look for my queries as i have registered for service of my refrigerator twice but no proper respond, hence i sent message "service" also where i had received called and i mentioned to the executive about my complain on service provided to me.
    I had received call again from chennai branch and asked me for reservice on my refrigerator where i had mentioned i am out of station please contact me on wednesday but again i didn't received call and any type of service till now.

    Sorry if i am troubling to anyone through writing this mail but i have contacted customer care and wrote message still waiting for resolution on my queries.

    As per my previous mail i have given a brief about poor service from LG representative. I have bought first thing in my house from LG and looking for more products in future however after this experience i will not sure that i can spread good mouth word to the other people.

    I would like to mention that i am suffering and looking for assistance from past 45 days.
    I have tried to write mail for couple of management team however my mail was not received or not taken seriously as there is not much information is there about management team.
    This step finally taken after no resolution from customer care through call, sms and writing them online LG website, Hence making you disturb if you will receive this information....may be i will get proper response..

    Sorry once again for bothering you and thank you if you would do something for me.

    Subject: bad experience with lg led 42lb6700
    and service center and dealer videon electronic (diamond tower ,jaipur)
    Sir
    I purched an led tv from videon ectronics and television g-1to 4 diamond tower ,purani chungi ajmer road jaipur , model 42lb6700 at 22-oct-2014. LED TV installed at 26-oct 2014.that time it have blue spot on right side I told to service engineer but he ignore it completely that is irresponsible
    . so I put complain 27-oct2014 no. rna 141027038952 ,service engineer came next day 28 oct2014 he told that this is manufacture panel defect known as pixel damage .and we will repair it only so I told that it is only one day old so replace it with new one .he told me that it will take one month so I went to videon electronic &television29-oct-2014 after complained him he ready to change to tv in few days .
    2. 5-11-2014 I call him and he told me that LED TV had come after the installation of replaced TV at my home TV found old and used. it is 59hrs run TV so I went to videon and told them that don’t cheat with costumer and don’t break customer trust towerds lg .suddenly that time mr .abhinav shrivastav (head lg Rajasthan) reached there after knowing that issue he assure me that he will arrange new TV in 5to 10 days
    3.at 11-11-2014 I call to videon electronic he told me that with the help of mrABHINAV SHRIVASTAV your new led tv had come .. at night of 11-11-2014 a big horizontal white line appears on led screen . .i put complain to videon electronic he told me to complain customer care so at 13-11-2014 I call customer care and put complain RNA 141113071062
    14-11-2014 the installation engineer visits at my home I gave him evidence on his wats app no 9829840759.after receiving those picture he told me that we will mail picture to head office
    15-11-2014 I call to engineer in morning around 10.27am , that white line again appears on screen he assure me he will came at one hour after waiting I received a message closing the complain with reason customer self repair without any solution and my permission . I call to service engineer he gave me another no 869602851 name arvind yadav , he has very arrogant behave towards call and told me that no complain in led tv and we did not close the complain only cancel the complain and told me that we mail to lg head office picture which is given by me to engineer .it is big question mark on lg product and service center .that service center doing work by his desire not on complain of customer complain
    So I don’t want to go in this rubbing shits so I went to videon electronic and told him that it is manufacturing defect so complain lg in yr behalf ,because service center have irresponsible behave

    So change the tv because only in three day a product which is related to lg having manufacturing defect it is not repair so change all led tv .he told me in “chahe jo b hi kr lo mai to change nhi krunga “ this type of behave effect lg reputation. So I asked videon electronic owner gopal chachan(9214066698) number of mr.abhinav shrivastav , he told me that I will not give u him mobile number .with rude behave ,
    So I call to customer care twice and put complain RNA 141115021905 AND executive assure me to call from lg senior officer .
    Sir tell me one thing that I purched an led tv from known brand lg so why should I go for complain again for manufacturing defect . I bought product for enjoyment not for headache I placed complain 3 time to customer care and 4-5 time to videon electronic .i believe that u will help me regarding this matter

  5. I need your assistance in getting the attention to the right contact from LG the following .
    I have purchased a LCD TV , date of purchase 19th July 2009 from Unilet , Indiranagar , Bangalore.
    Product is not working since 3rd October 2014 , we have registered a complaint vide Req ID : RNA141103069038.
    What we understand ,after 3 round of changing the various cards , there is no parts available to replace the defective part as this model is obsolete now.
    I understand , from your service team that they will refund some money to my account but no clue about amount or a replacement plan, I appreciate someone from customer care taking the call as there is no role for service anymore .

  6. Please refer to my emails dated May 10, and July 5 2015.
    The above mails were addressed to Mr. Soon Kwon (then LG India MD) and Mr. Boo Joon Koo.
    My complaints have not yet been resolved.
    There has been no communication from your side either.
    Message seems to be clear. You are conveying that LG is not bothered about customers.
    Customers to buy the products at their own risk.
    Ok, fine. I will not buy any LG product in future. I was a committed LG customer till last year.
    I am conveying this message to everyone in social media.
    I am advising all to buy Sony for TV and Samsung for cooling devices. Lenovo for mobiles and laptops.
    They provide excellent service.
    But I am stuck with three LG Acs and I one again request you to provide some service for this.
    Instead of that, I get a call from service provider on 3rd October 2015 five months after my first mail to you, they prepare a contract copy. Then they say, this form is wrong. Next day they refuse to provide service.
    I cant make a head or tail of it.
    If service cannot be provided, (for which I am willing to pay), please advise me so by mail / letter; stating reasons.

    I donot know the new LG India MD (Mr. Kim Ki-Wan) email address.
    It is useless to frward the mail to lg service email id.
    Please forward this mail to LG India MD if any action is contemplated by the company.

    I am Tarun kapoor from India in New Delhi. I bought LG LED TV last January 11-2015. I use Tv now and I want wall installation service. But LG company give me reason of service warranty time expire. this reason and excuse is very cheap

    My name is Gaurav Grover (loyal and very old customer of LG). I purchased a LG double door refrigerator 4 years back. The price of the machine was around Rs 80000 at that time. Machine performed well in the first 3 years. After that cooling of the machine dipped. We called LG customer care to repair the same. An LG executive came and said that he will take at least 7-10 working days time to arrange the coil of the machine. I requested him to arrange the coil asap as we cannot afford to survive without the refrigerator as it plays an important role. He denied for the same. We called an engineer from local market and got the machine fixed. Machine worked well however after a year we faced the same cooling problem in the machine. We again called LG customer care number and luckily or unluckily same old engineer was assigned for the case. He visited our residence and asked us to pay Rs 700 as visiting charges, we asked him to fix the issue. He suggested us to wait for 2 days as he has to consult his senior about the same. I contacted him after 2 days, he suggested us to throw the machine out in Hindi
    Engineer words “Is fridge ko faank do bahar”.
    I wanted my machine to be repaired so I requested him again for the same
    Engineer words “Isko aag laga do”
    I said that being a LG brand engineer he should not say these words otherwise I will call customer care.
    Engineer words “ Jisko complaint karne and kar do aur iss machine ko aag laga do”
    I am sorry but I do not want to put my refrigerator on fire because of two reasons :
    1. Loyalty with LG as I use a tower AC and other LG appliances which are excellent
    2. I cannot afford to put my refrigerator on fire

    Challenges faced by me :
    1. LG engineer was unprofessional and rude with me.
    2. He has no right to suggest that I should put my LG refrigerator on fire.
    3. He should have changed the coil by charging me money as I am not asking for warranty of the machine or any kind of favour from him. I am ready to pay the charges.
    4. I requested him to give me the coil as well so that I can get original LG coil fitted in my refrigerator by a local engineer however LG engineer denied for the same. Now I am left with only one option which is that I should actually put my refrigerator on fire as suggested by LG engineer however my loyalty towards the brand LG is not allowing me to do so. I have concluded from this instance that according to that LG engineer, life of LG products is just 4 years and after that all LG products should put on fire. These type of LG engineers does not even care that how much hard work is done to make a big brand like LG.
    5. LG says Life is Good however my life is hell because of LG after sales services in the summers of delhi.

    This is absurd. I never expected such a rude and unprofessional behaviour from LG. This instance was embarrassing for me and my family members and changed my 20 years old loyalty towards the brand LG. I do not feel like using any LG product and will not recommend any of my friends and near ones to buy LG products because customer service/After sales service is the backbone of every business which LG does not understands or have stopped understanding. I think LG has to burn midnight oil to build the same old customer service team which they use to have. May be there is gap in hiring or training of the engineers. Someone has to look into it asap as these type of engineers will turn many positive/loyal customers like me to negative customers. These kind of employees are changing the perception of loyal and old customer like me.

    I purchased a ref GL - T522GN SL NS on 27 Oct 2017. From sargam electronics lajpat Nagar New Delhi.

    Since begining I have been facing issues in the said product..For which several complaints where made to the dealer and your customer care as well .
    I'm sorry to say but your after sales services are really pathetic and quality of engineers is worse.

    As it was winter's we also did not paid much heed .

    But now as the temperatures have increased ...There is no cooling in the refrigerator for past one and half months ...I have been chasing your people for the solution but nothing has been done.

    Four different engineer s visited and everyone had a different opinion...
    All my household goods are getting spoiled ..We are a joint family and cannot afford to have a piece of shit worth INR 50000 lying at our place..

    Few names who I have spoken to are Mr. Rishabh Jain...Very arrogant and used abusive language ..Instead of listening to customer's plea ..He tells you about the policies.

    Mr. Ashok chugh ...Service head who after several phone calls and SMS ...Happen to speak to you...And tells you that so what if you have spend 50000..My policy does not allows to give a replacement and it's not such a major issue..You can go anywhere you wish to.

    Sir please understand it's my hard earned money that I had spent for comfort of my family and not for you people to come and do research .

    I urge you to please look into the case and get my refrigerator replaced or refund...Else I would be forced to approach other authorities for the same..

    Why should I buy your LG Air Conditioner for INR Rs. 50,000.00 and have Struggle?

    My wife asked me to purchased Rupees fifty thousand and ask me why we should have face difficulty for eight days?
    And I have faced many family problems with my wife due to your LG Air Conditioner.

    1. So I don’t want your LG Air Conditioner or replacement. Am so highly dissatisfied your product and your service. And I am disappointed by you and your Dealer M/s. Vasanth & co.

    2. And I had lost my money, my Energy, my time, my happiness, my self-Respect from my wife because of your LG Air Conditioner

    3. I got so depressed.

    4. My Sleep has gone.

    5. My Relief has gone.
